So then I installed the msys tools using the installer at. Note that I ONLY installed the tools since the comiler is presumably already installed with Johnoel's commands. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/Installer/ put c:\MinGW\msys\1.0\bin on my path. Check by using commands like rm and cp. OK so far.
