Update,

The model estimates fixed effects in phase 1, random effect and sd in phase 2 and works
If I estimate one more fixed effect in phase 3 I get the problem. It appears to stop before phase 3.
If I estimate the extra parameter in phase 4 rather than phase 3, I get the error message "index value is 72 indexmax() is 71"

I think I have 71 parameters including random effects, so it may be related to that.


Kind of weird.

I am running a RE model and get a good gradient, but it stops and does not do the hessian or produce a report file. I remember seeing this in the mail list before, but can find it in the archives. Any advice?
